South Greenland Photography Tour

Set sail in autumn for South Greenland aboard the Maria schooner! During this 11-day photography workshop, you'll delve into the spectacular fjords of Greenland, where breathtaking natural wonders abound. This sailing expedition will take you into the wilderness of Tasermiut fjord and Prince Christian Sound, where glaciers and icebergs reign supreme. There will be the opportunity to make shore landings with Zodiacs, during which we'll hike through the rugged Greenlandic terrain in search of glistening lakes, flowing rivers and beautiful waterfalls. Autumn in Greenland is a magical time of year when the Northern Lights dance across the night sky. If the skies are clear, then we'll be in the perfect place to witness the mesmerizing patterns of this atmospheric phenomenon from aboard our Arctic-class vessel. There is no fixed itinerary on this tour – rather, we will hunt for compositions and make the most of the enchanting autumn light as we weave through the fjords, marveling at the staggering granite mountain peaks in the beautiful surroundings. Our expert photography guides will work together with the crew of the Maria to ensure that you'll be taken to the best places for photography, depending on the weather conditions and situation of the sea ice. If we spot wildlife ashore, then we'll jump into our Zodiacs straight away to maneuver into the best positions for photography. Your safety during this sailing photography workshop is of the utmost priority. We'll have a satellite phone, navigational system and ice maps on-hand throughout the duration of the tour. In addition, you'll be able to charge your batteries 24 hours a day, while our personal chef will prepare delicious meals onboard featuring local meat, fish and fresh vegetables. Get ready to explore South Greenland with us beneath the Northern Lights in autumn! Check availability by selecting a date.

Greenland Photo Tour in Scoresby Sound | Sailing on Schooner

Join us on this 10 day adventurous photo expedition to the rugged land of Scoresby Sound in east Greenland, capturing otherworldly scenery like you have never witnessed before. This photography tour is an adventure through the rugged waterways of Scoresby Sound, a network of stunning fjords that will take your breath away. To take a trip through the icy wilderness of this region is to go back to a time when things were simpler, when our collective will was worth little in the face of nature’s supreme power. There are few places left in the world where landscapes, weather and the seasons combine to leave you feeling both small and in awe, but the eastern coast of Greenland is certainly one of those remaining wonders. We will spend ten spectacular days sailing through pristine arctic landscapes, gazing up at imposing basalt cliffs, capturing icebergs as they make a break for the open ocean, and delighting in the rare wildlife that calls Greenland home. It will be summer when we sail, so we will travel beneath the ethereal light of the Midnight Sun, shooting in the near-constant glow that comes from being this far north at this time of the year. Rare arctic plants, serene icebergs, towering cliffs and spectacular glacier formations are just the tip of the iceberg; we are also likely to witness whales in their natural habitat and countless species of birds. The bulk of our traveling will take place on board our ship the Donna Wood. It’s a fitting way to explore this part of the world, and we will sail along in silence without disturbing areas that have stood quietly for thousands of years. While the deck of the ship will offer incredible views throughout the tour, we will be using zodiac boats to take trips onto shore and extend our exploration of the many glaciers and icebergs. What are you waiting for? Ten spectacular nights aboard the Donna Wood in the spectacular surrounds of Greenland await. Secure your place today!

Red Sails in Greenland | Summer Photo Workshop

Our base for this photography tour will be a place called Disko Bay, which rests on Greenland’s west coast. There we’ll be well north of the Arctic Circle - something that will quickly become clear as we get to know some of the local wildlife. Luckily for us, the Disko Bay area is known for regular visits of humpback whales and seals, so we’ll always have one eye on the water! Out on the Icefjord, the water is calm and there are next to no waves, so spotting wildlife and capturing incredible reflections should be well within our grasp. Disko Bay is a bay on the western coast of Greenland, where for the duration of the trip we will spend our nights at a 4-star hotel. This guarantees that the group will be well rested, properly fed, and within walking distance of plenty of Greenlandic culture. Ilulissat is known for its colourful houses, dog sledges, museums, fish markets, and hospitable locals. In short, there’s plenty to do while you’re waiting for your camera batteries to recharge! The villages of Greenland aren’t really connected by highways or motorways. Here the sea is king, and the natural waterways offer the best routes to take. Because of this, we will charter a private boat for the entirety of our adventure. On our journey we will visit several Greenlandic settlements, including Qasigiannguit, Aasiaat, and Oqaatsut. Much of our travelling and photography around Ilulissat’s Icefjord will be carried out at night, when the midnight sun offers the best light to work with and the conditions are unlike anything you will have experienced. More often than not we will begin our sessions late in the evening and continue through the night, chasing the best light and the most spectacular scenes. With the sun low on the horizon the light will become more saturated, with deep icy blues and a sky tinged with fiery reds. This magical light lasts between 2 to 4 hours, so we will try and make the most of it by cruising each evening.. This tour is suitable for all levels of experience and ability. We’ve got a savvy captain who’s used to working with photographers, knows the area well, and has an uncanny knack of sussing out great spots from behind the wheel. However, please note that the itinerary proposed is subject to the weather conditions. One thing we can promise is that we’ll take you to the best locations and help you walk away with a catalogue of inspiring photographs you’ll be proud of. So what are you waiting for? Six days and five glorious nights in Greenland await...

West Greenland Photo Workshop in Disko Bay | Sailing on Schooner

Join the adventure of a lifetime as we sail the seas of Greenland beneath the Midnight Sun in summer. This 7-day sailing photo tour on the west coast of Greenland will have you immersed in the pristine Arctic nature as you explore small Inuit settlements along the coast, come face-to-face with extraordinary wildlife and marvel at the majestic icebergs that float serenely in the waters of Disko Bay. For the duration of the tour, we will sail aboard our privately-chartered schooner, 'Maria', around the village of Ilulissat – the capital of Disko Bay. It is the perfect place to be situated, being located right next to the spectacular icefjord. We will moor at Ilulissat village several times during our stay to explore museums, sample the local cuisine and delve into nature on a number of fascinating hikes. Other Greenlandic settlements that we will visit during our journey include Qasigiannguit, Aasiaat and Oqaatsut, spread along the coast. The enchanting surroundings of Disko Bay make it a natural habitat for an abundance of living creatures. There will be amazing opportunities for wildlife photography as we keep our eyes open for Arctic foxes, musk oxen and humpback whales. Disko Bay is also an important breeding site for marine birds such as fulmars and terns, and is home to the last remaining thick-billed murre colony in the area. The majority of our sailing will be conducted late in the evenings and throughout the night, when we will cruise beneath the ethereal light of the Midnight Sun. At this time of year, the sun never really sets, casting the sky in dramatic hues of pink, icy blue, purple, blazing red and orange as it barely skims across the horizon. We will sail amongst the fascinating icebergs of the icefjord that have calved from the nearby Sermeq Kujalleq glacier, capturing their many different shapes and sizes.  The captain of the Maria is very experienced and will work closely with us to scout for the best locations in Disko Bay from which we can capture the many incredible sights. Due to the unpredictable weather conditions in this area, our itinerary will be flexible and our guides will aim to have you in all the right spots to take advantage of the fantastic light. Unleash your creativity and join us on this spectacular 7 day sailing photography tour of Greenland! An Arctic adventure beneath the Midnight Sun awaits. There are only 18 spots available so get in quick to secure your place before they all sell out.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Greenland

When should I visit? Will we be on the boat the entire time? We made a list of the top questions about our Greenland tours and answered them below.

1. When should I go to Greenland?

Summer is the best time for photography in Greenland, when the light of the Midnight Sun casts an enchanting glow over the icebergs in the ice fjords. With so much daylight throughout the night, you'll spend entire evenings chasing beautiful compositions.

2. Can I see the Northern Lights in Greenland?

You'll be able to see the Northern Lights during our autumn photography workshop in South Greenland, when the days are shorter and the nights are dark enough for the stars to shine through. It's also a great time to go hiking for wonderful things to photograph onshore, such as mountains, wildlife and flowers.

3. How long is the flight time to Greenland?

It will take you approximately 4.5 hours to fly from Copenhagen in Denmark to Kangerlussuaq in Greenland. Once you have landed in Kangerlussuaq, you will be able to take a flight towards your final destination. It takes approximately an hour to fly from Kangerlussuaq to Ilulissat. If you will be departing from Reykjavik in Iceland, then the flight time to Ilulissat will be approximately 3 hours.

4. What kind of clothing should I bring on my trip?

We suggest that you pack layers and wear warm, waterproof and wind resistant clothing. The weather is similar to Iceland, so for our Greenland photo tours, we suggest that you refer to our detailed packing list here.

5. Do I need to bring cash or can I use credit card in Greenland?

Most places in Greenland accept credit card. You can also withdraw cash from ATMs if needed.

6. Which currency is used in Greenland?

The Danish kroner is the currency of Greenland. We do not recommend that you bring Euro or US dollars as this currency will not be accepted. You do not necessarily have to bring cash as most places will allow you to use a credit card.

7. When should I travel if I want to see the Midnight Sun in Greenland?

8. What are the accommodation standards in Greenland?

During our tours, we stay in the best hotels in Greenland, which are generally rated as 4 or 5 stars. During our schooner workshops, we will stay aboard the ship in basic but comfortable accommodation.

9. Is there Wifi in Greenland?

You will have access to wifi during hotel stays and when we are sailing on our schooners.

10. Is it easy to travel in Greenland on your own?

There are no roads connecting the villages in Greenland. The only way to get around is by hiking or taking a boat. We recommend taking a tour as you will be able to see much more with our expert photography guides. They will also help you to develop your photography skills and share their knowledge with you about the culture and surroundings, to give you a well-rounded experience in Greenland.
