Description

Discover the magnificent beauty hidden inside a glacier on this spectacular day-trip starting from Langjökull!

Known in Icelandic as the ‘long glacier’, Langjökull is the second-largest ice cap in Iceland and certainly one of the most iconic. Situated on the western side of the Icelandic Highlands, meltwater from this glacier feeds into the country’s incredible Hvítá river, the source of the breathtaking Gullfoss waterfall upon the famous Golden Circle.

During this tour, you’ll have the once-in-a-lifetime chance of observing the frozen ice tunnels within Langjökull glacier. These natural labyrinths have been carved into the glacier over a prolonged period of time by meltwater streams, creating stunning passageways of crystal white, blue, grey and black ice.

You’ll meet the rest of your group as well as your guide at Húsafell, near the town of Borgarfjörður in the west of Iceland. From there, you’ll board a specially-modified eight-wheel-drive monster truck, capable of traversing the rugged terrain on the ascent towards Langjökull glacier. The lava fields will slowly give way to snowy mountains set amidst breathtaking landscapes as you head deep into the heart of the Icelandic Highlands.

Be prepared to be entertained by your guide, who will share their in-depth knowledge of Icelandic history and how this majestic glacier has changed over time. You’ll learn all about Langjökull’s fascinating ice tunnels, as well as the man made ice caves that lie within. Upon reaching the entrance to the ice tunnels, your guide will go over a number of safety briefings, before equipping you with crampons for trekking on the ice.

This tour does not involve any strenuous activity. It is perfect for nature lovers who are looking for some fun and capable of walking for around an hour or so. You’ll have an hour to explore the exhilarating tunnels and caves within the glacier, including a cavernous room that has been specially carved out as a chapel, where many couples have fulfilled their dreams of being married. Inside the glacier is well-lit and although it may be wet and slippery, your crampons will make walking upon the relatively even ground all the more easier.

Once you have completed this thrilling tour inside one of Iceland’s most famous glaciers, you’ll head back onto the monster truck for the journey back to Húsafell centre. There will be plenty of sights to marvel at along the way, so be sure to have your camera at the ready to capture the beautiful scenery passing by.

The Langjökull ice tunnels are open all year-round; however, please note that glacier tours are weather dependent and accessibility depends upon the prevailing conditions. You will be advised ahead of time if the tour is not planned to go ahead due to poor weather that may impact upon the group’s safety.

No matter what season in which you’ll be travelling, this memorable experience inside Langjökull glacier will be an exciting point to tick off your bucket list. Do not miss out on the unique opportunity to see this unbelievable glacier in Iceland! Check availability by choosing a date.
