Join us on an 8 day autumn photography tour of the enchanting Faroe Islands! Situated in the midst of the North Atlantic Ocean, this stunning archipelago of volcanic islands is a landscape photography destination just waiting to be discovered. There is so much to capture across this unexplored region, from undulating valleys to scenic fjords, majestic mountain ridges, charming villages by the sea, extraordinary lakes, magical waterfalls and more. The pristine nature here is incredibly surreal; there's no doubt that you'll feel like you're stepping into a fairytale at every turn.

During autumn in the Faroe Islands, the days are shorter meaning later sunrises, earlier sunsets and the return of the Northern Lights. You'll have the opportunity to capture the elusive Aurora if the conditions are just right. Alongside this, the foliage in the landscape will be taking on beautiful hues of gold, red and orange during the transition of the seasons, making for a myriad of truly stunning compositions.

Whether you are just starting out in photography or a seasoned professional, there is something on this photography workshop for everyone. Daily itinerary

Day 1

Day 1 - Arrival

You'll fly in to the Faroe Islands and arrive at the Vágar Airport, where you'll check in to your hotel nearby. There will be some time to freshen up, before you meet with the rest of the group in the evening for a welcome dinner at a local restaurant. Over a delicious meal, your photo guide will discuss the itinerary for the days ahead. You'll have the opportunity to ask any questions that you may have. You'll retire for the evening in Vágar.

Day 2

Day 2 - Vágar Island

You'll set off bright and early on day two to begin your photography adventure in the Faroe Islands! The first location you will visit is the spectacular Múlafossur waterfall by the village of Gásadalur. It is a famous natural sight, dropping from a steep cliff face into the raging waters of the North Atlantic Ocean below, making for dramatic imagery. We'll then continue our journey towards Lake Sørvágsvatn – the lake above the sea. It's a magical spot which offers a spectacular optical illusion. While the lake sits roughly 100 metres above sea level, it appears to be much higher, floating atop an enormous cliff face and expanding further than the eye can see. We'll hike towards a scenic viewpoint from where we'll capture this breathtaking scene, marvelling at the Bøsdalafoss waterfall as it tumbles from the lake into the ocean. The afternoon will be spent at Tindhólmur, a small islet with a rather astonishing view. This is where the rugged Drangarnir sea stacks rise out of the tumultuous waves – their unique and imposing shapes seemingly huge against the churning water. We'll then return to our accommodation for a hearty dinner, keeping our eyes turned towards the sky in anticipation of the Northern Lights.

Day 3

Day 3 - Vágar Island

On the third day of our tour, we'll continue our exploration of Vágar Island. Your guide will take you to the best locations in order to make the most of the prevailing conditions. The weather can change dramatically during this time of year in the Faroe Islands, so no doubt you will be able to catch different atmospheres depending upon the light. In the evening, we'll continue our chase for the Northern Lights. If the conditions do not cooperate, then we'll settle in for a masterclass post-processing session for the night.

Day 4

Day 4 - Streymoy Island

We'll get up early on day four to drive to the largest island in the Faroese archipelago – Streymoy Island – where we'll situate ourselves for the day. There is so much to photograph here, including the village of Tjørnuvík with its black sand beach. In the afternoon, we'll head to the quaint village of Saksun, where turf-roofed houses rule the landscapes like a scene from The Hobbit. The village is situated in a valley surrounded by majestic mountain peaks, making for a number of stunning backdrops to our compositions. Our sunset session will be at the nearby Fossá waterfall, which is a beautiful sight in the ethereal autumn light. We'll then return to our accommodation for dinner and wait in anticipation for the Northern Lights.

Day 5

Day 5 - Eysturoy Island

We'll check out of our accommodation on day five, continuing our journey to the picturesque village of Gjógv. This will be our base for the next few days as we explore Eysturoy Island and the surrounds. The village itself is situated at the base of a 200 metre long gorge that runs towards the ocean. It's an incredible view and we'll be sure to capture it from a number of angles. In the afternoon, we'll travel to the nearby village of Funningur, arriving just in time for the golden hour and sunset. Our subject will be the old wooden Funningur church, set against the backdrop of an extraordinary fjord. With its grassy roof and stone fence surrounded by blue water, it's a truly magical place to see out the day.

Day 6

Day 6 - Kalsoy Island

On the sixth day of our adventure, we'll have breakfast before making our way to Kalsoy Island. This steep island may seem unreachable, though we will conquer it with all our might. After an exhilarating but easy hike, we'll find ourselves at an extraordinary panoramic viewpoint, where we'll be perfectly situated to capture the Kallur Lighthouse at the edge of a mindblowing cliff. The reward for our efforts will be a scenic vista of Eysturoy Island to the west, with Kunoy and Viðoy islands to the east. Later on in the afternoon, we'll explore the remote Viðareiði village where we'll hike to another viewpoint on one of the nearby cliffs. Our sunset session will be at Viðareiði church, standing peacefully by the edge of the sea. We’ll then retire for the night at the Gjógv hotel.

Day 7

Day 7 - Borðoy Island

This will be our final day of shooting. We'll spend it exploring Borðoy Island in the north, traversing the fjords and marvelling at the mountains that surround the village of Árnafjørður. This island is best known for the harbour village of Klaksvík, which stands at the base of a spectacular mountain. In the afternoon, we'll hike along the Klakkur mountain ridge towards a location where we'll have an amazing view across the ocean towards Kalsoy Island. We'll then return to Gjógv for our final dinner as a group before retiring for the night.

Day 8

Day 8 - Departure

Understandably, day eight will be bittersweet as our adventure comes to an end. However, there's no doubt that you'll be filled with a sense of accomplishment, having seen so much and improving your photography skills in such a short amount of time. After breakfast at the hotel, your photo guide will drop you off back at the Vágar airport, where you'll be able to catch your flight home or onwards to your next destination.

The tour is always dependent on weather, as the weather can indeed be highly unpredictable. When it comes to the Northern Lights, while they are most likely to be seen between September and April, there is no guarantee that they will appear on a given day.

Thomas Vikre is a Danish / Norwegian award-winning photographer based in the Faroe Islands, his work consists primarily of landscape, travel & fine art photography, but he also does a substantial amount of commercial work for local companies.

Thomas also guides for private clients, groups and photo tour companies visiting the Faroe Islands and has rapidly become a reference in the isles. Earlier in his professional career, he was involved in the airline & tourism industry. On a part time basis, he also worked as a production assistant on film sets and with TV commercials. In 2013 he decided to relocate to the Faroe Islands, a place he had visited on numerous occasions before. His work has been licensed to local tourism entities, guide books, to multiple business partners & to private customers.

He has also had exhibits at different venues in the Faroe Islands these past years, including a permanent exhibit at Hotel Vagar in the Faroe Islands. Thomas is fluent in the scandinavian languages as well as Spanish, English and Portuguese.
