Perhaps one of Europe's best-kept secrets, this self-governing Nordic archipelago of 18 rocky islands tucked away in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean harbours such unbelievable scenery that it is sure to captivate any landscape photographer.

Largely unexplored, the islands are packed with unique and inspiring scenes. From rugged mountains to extraordinary cliffs, magnificent waterfalls plunging into the ocean, colourful villages and incredible wildlife, this remote destination has it all.

Summer is the best time to visit the Faroe Islands, when the sun doesn't set until late. You'll have many hours of daylight to explore to your heart's delight, while the magical golden hours will linger into the night. It's the best time to catch a glimpse of the millions of migrating seabirds that nest on the cliffs, including puffins.

Even in summer, the weather conditions in the Faroe Islands can be dynamic, making for truly moody and atmospheric photographs. Day 1

Day 1 - Vágar Island

The adventure begins when your photography guide picks you up from your accommodation in the morning. You'll then make your way to Sørvágsvatn, the largest lake in the Faroe Islands. You may have already seen photos of this extraordinary marvel of nature, which appears to be suspended high above the ocean. You'll spend the morning capturing this optical delight, before moving on to a waterfall like no other. The iconic Múlafossur waterfall is one that captures the imagination. It flows from the side of a steep cliff face, plunging into the ocean below. On a calm day, it seems like something out of a fairytale, while dark skies can make its pretty descent seem all the more dramatic. It's a fitting place for a sunset session and a must-see location when visiting the Faroe Islands.

Day 2

Day 2 - Streymoy Island

On day two, you'll travel to the nearby Streymoy Island. The largest within the archipelago, this island harbours some incredible scenes for landscape photography. One of the locations that you'll visit is the small settlement of Saksun. Set above a tidal lagoon, surrounded by fascinating fjords and cliffs soaring high into the sky, it makes for wonderful compositions and a stunning panorama. There are beautiful historical buildings here, waterfalls and even the possibility of wandering out onto a beach at the mouth of a fjord during low tide. However, the highlight of the day will be a sunset session at the Fossá waterfall. It is easy to access and a magical sight when lit by the sunset.

Day 3

Day 3 - Eysturoy Island

The third day sees you heading to Eysturoy – the second largest island of the Faroe Islands. It holds some wonderful treasures when it comes to landscape photography. Magnificent mountains, swirling waterfalls and stunning vistas are all on the cards as we explore this photogenic island. In the morning, we'll head to Gjógv, a small town where boats enter from the sea and make their way into a charming gorge. In the afternoon, there will be the chance to take a short hiking trail to the top of Hvíthamar mountain ridge. It makes for a stunning panorama, with cliffs and mountains framing the Funningsfjørður fjord – a truly breathtaking place for an adventurous selfie!

Day 4

Day 4 - The Northern Islands

On the final day of our photography tour, we'll hike to the summit of Klakkur. The view from the peak is exceptionally spectacular and among one of the most beautiful in the Faroe Islands. The hike is short and pleasant, while the epic opportunity to capture the villages of Klaksvík and Viðareiði below makes for a truly rewarding experience. At the end of the day, your photography guide will drop you back off at your accommodation, no doubt with a bulging portfolio of photos to remember your time spent exploring the enchanting Faroe Islands.

Thomas Vikre is a Danish / Norwegian award-winning photographer based in the Faroe Islands, his work consists primarily of landscape, travel & fine art photography, but he also does a substantial amount of commercial work for local companies.

Thomas also guides for private clients, groups and photo tour companies visiting the Faroe Islands and has rapidly become a reference in the isles. Earlier in his professional career, he was involved in the airline & tourism industry. On a part time basis, he also worked as a production assistant on film sets and with TV commercials. In 2013 he decided to relocate to the Faroe Islands, a place he had visited on numerous occasions before. His work has been licensed to local tourism entities, guide books, to multiple business partners & to private customers.

He has also had exhibits at different venues in the Faroe Islands these past years, including a permanent exhibit at Hotel Vagar in the Faroe Islands. Thomas is fluent in the scandinavian languages as well as Spanish, English and Portuguese.
