Þingvellir National Park is an idyllic spot for snorkelling, where a treasure trove of natural wonders beckons to be found. This UNESCO World Heritage Site bears the evidence of thousands of years of continental drift, which has torn up the surrounding landscape to create deep fissures and rifts.
During this tour, you will visit the top snorkel site in Iceland – Silfra fissure –where you will have the opportunity to dive in and swim with an expert PADI Divemaster instructor. Situated between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, Silfra features crystal clear freshwater and contains three main dive sites for you to explore. All you’ll need to bring are your personal items, such as comfortable long underwear and a camera. Included in this activity is the chance to have your picture taken with a GoPro camera, which will be sent immediately to your email address at the conclusion of the tour, at no extra cost.
The tour begins when you meet your guide at a marked van within the Silfra parking lot. From there, you’ll make your way across Þingvellir National Park, passing by fascinating geological formations and dramatic mossy landscapes on your way to Þingvallavatn, a rift valley lake which happens to be the largest lake in Iceland.
Once you have arrived at your dive site, you’ll receive a comprehensive safety briefing from your guide to prepare you for the adventure ahead. You’ll then be equipped with the necessary gear required to descend into the depths of Silfra, including neoprene hoods and gloves, as well as a thermal undersuit and drysuit to protect you from the 2°C / 35°F glacial water. You’ll also receive a mask, snorkel and fins, which will no doubt assist you to glide through the water with ease.
Diving into the clear blue expanse of Silfra is one of the most amazing things that you can do while travelling in Iceland. Enjoy the hidden beauty underwater as you float past ancient canyon walls, covered by blooms of algae. Prepare yourself for the highlight of touching each side of the continental plates, a unique and exhilarating experience that is sure to embed itself in your memories for many years to come.
From the Big Crack of Silfra, you’ll swim through to the widest section, known as Silfra Hall. There will be plenty of time to explore this section before allowing the currents to slowly push you through to Silfra Cathedral, the deepest part of the fissure. Eventually, you’ll rise into the shallows of Silfra Lagoon, a veritable oasis at the end of a remarkable journey through the depths of Silfra fissure.

Good to know
Attention before booking. Note that to be able to take this tour, you have to be able to comply with the following requirements:
- Have read, signed, and followed directions on the Snorkeling Silfra Medical Statement Form. You will receive a link to it on your voucher once you book the tour.
- Be comfortable in water and be able to swim.
- Communicate in English at the time of the tour.
- Be physically fit.
- Not be pregnant.
- You must be ready to wear a tight and constricting dry suit to protect your body from the cold.
- You must be a minimum of 150 cm and a maximum of 200 cm in height and weigh between 45 and 120 kilos along with being physically fit.
- If you are 60 years of age or older, you need a medical waiver, available on page 2 of the medical form.
- You must be a minimum of 12 years of age to participate in this tour. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian booked on the same tour.
- If you are over 45 and partake/have partaken in pipe smoking or heavy alcohol intake, you need a medical waiver.
- Please note that should you have any neurological, circulatory or respiratory problems or underlying diseases, battled any illnesses or have any physical problems you might have to turn in a physicians allowance to participate in this tour.
