7 Day Azores Photo Workshop

We begin the day at Lagoa do Fogo, a spectacular volcanic lake surrounded by lush vegetation and steep crater walls. The changing weather and shifting clouds often create dramatic photographic opportunities across the turquoise waters. In the afternoon, we explore Sete Cidades, one of São Miguel’s most iconic landscapes. From the panoramic viewpoints, including Miradouro da Grota do Inferno, we capture the famous twin lakes and the rolling green terrain surrounding the volcanic caldera. We stay into the late afternoon to make the most of the changing light and atmospheric conditions.

Our day begins at Vila Franca Islet, a remarkable volcanic formation known for its circular lagoon and striking geometry. We explore different viewpoints to capture its unique shape and relationship with the surrounding Atlantic Ocean, with aerial photography opportunities subject to local drone regulations. Next, we visit Terra Nostra Park, a historic botanical garden filled with exotic plants, towering trees, and distinctive iron-rich thermal pools. We also have the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing soak in the warm waters. After a traditional Cozido das Furnas lunch, we make our way to Mosteiros Beach, where dramatic sea stacks and rugged volcanic shores provide a spectacular setting for long exposures and sunset photography.

We take a flight to Flores (not included in the tour cost), one of the most remote and enchanting islands in the Azores, known for its lush landscapes, volcanic lakes, and spectacular waterfalls. On our way to Fajã Grande, we stop at Rocha dos Frades, an impressive rock formation rising above the surrounding terrain. We then explore the viewpoints overlooking Lagoa Rasa and Lagoa Funda, where contrasting colors, crater walls, and rolling hills offer a variety of landscape compositions. We finish the day at Rocha dos Bordões, a striking geological formation featuring towering basalt columns that create fascinating patterns, textures, and opportunities for creative photography.

The weather on Flores can change quickly, so we keep our itinerary flexible to take advantage of the best photographic conditions. We explore the highlands around Morro Alto, visiting viewpoints overlooking Lagoa Negra and Lagoa Comprida, two beautiful volcanic lakes set among the island’s dramatic green landscapes. After lunch, we head north toward Ponta Delgada, stopping along the rugged coastline to photograph sweeping ocean views, steep cliffs, and the island’s remote scenery. We end the day at Albarnaz Lighthouse, perched above the Atlantic and surrounded by dramatic coastal landscapes that offer excellent opportunities for seascape photography.

We start early at Baía da Alagoa, a picturesque rocky bay framed by striking basalt sea stacks, with views toward the neighboring island of Corvo. The combination of ocean, dark volcanic rock, and changing morning light makes this a wonderful location for seascape photography. After lunch, we visit Poço da Ribeira do Ferreiro, one of the most spectacular natural sites in the Azores. A short hike brings us to a lush lagoon surrounded by towering cliffs and numerous waterfalls cascading down the green rock face. We spend the afternoon exploring different compositions and photographing this magical landscape as the light and atmospheric conditions evolve.

We gather for a farewell breakfast, reminiscing about the unforgettable moments and incredible photographs we’ve captured throughout the workshop.
