Description

Explore the wild and enchanting Faroe Islands on this magical 6 day photography tour! We'll journey into the heart of this archipelago of volcanic islands adrift in the North Atlantic Ocean, as we unearth photographic treasures hidden in the largely unexplored surrounds.

Autumn is a spectacular time for photography in the Faroe Islands, when the stunning fjords are tinged burnt orange and gold with the earthy transition to fall. The shoulder season is characterised by shorter days and longer nights, carrying the promise of witnessing the Northern Lights as they dance over the pristine landscapes and whimsical villages by the sea.

While the seabirds will have invariably left the islands, there will still be much to photograph along the coast, with the changeable, dynamic weather making for truly dramatic and atmospheric scenes. We'll be able to enjoy the islands in solitude as the tourism winds down for the coming winter season.

Over the course of this six-day autumn photography adventure, we will capture the beauty of the magical coastlines, breathtaking mountain peaks and awe-inspiring cliffs that the Faroe Islands are well-known for, making the most of this incredible travel destination in the ever-changing light. Develop your photography skills and expand your portfolio as you immerse yourself in the unspoiled nature of the Faroe Islands. Check availability by choosing a date.

Day 1
6 Day Autumn Faroe Islands Photo Tour - day 1

Day 1 - Arrival

You'll catch your first glimpse of the incredible Faroe Islands when you arrive at Vágar airport. The flight will take approximately 1½ hours from Reykjavík in Iceland or Copenhagen in Denmark. We suggest that you arrive prior to 17:00, so that you'll be able to meet with the rest of the group in the evening. Upon arrival, you'll make your way to the Vágar airport hotel where you'll have some time to rest. Later on, we'll meet together for a welcome dinner, where you'll have the chance to get to know your fellow travellers a little better. Your photo guide will go over the itinerary with you for the days ahead. After dinner, there may be the possibility of heading out for your first photography session, should the Northern Lights make a display! Otherwise, we'll settle in for the night in anticipation of an early rise in the morning.

Day 2 - Múlafossur waterfall, Tindhólmur Islet

We'll get up early for a sunrise session at nearby Gásadalur, a small village surrounded by expansive fields that is home to the famous Múlafossur waterfall. It makes for a surreal sight, plunging from the side of a sheer cliff face into the turbulent waters of the ocean below. We will then spend the rest of the day chasing the light according to the conditions. In the evening, we'll make our way back to Vágar Island for a sunset session at Tindhólmur, where you'll bear witness to an incredible view of the Drangarnir sea stacks pointing jaggedly out of the ocean. It makes for a wonderful composition should the Northern Lights dance across the night sky!

Day 3 - Leitisvatn, Gjogv, Saksun Village

Day three sees us rising early for a sunrise session at Leitisvatn – an expansive lake that appears to float high above the ocean on the edge of a sheer cliff face. It's a stunning composition and although the hike will take about an hour, the views are incredibly rewarding. Thereafter, we'll return to the hotel for breakfast and check out before moving on towards Gjógv village on Eysturoy Island. We'll make a number of stops along the way for photography, as the views along the way are stunning. In the afternoon, we'll head to the remote hillside village of Saksun in anticipation of the sunset. There are many opportunities for photography here, including a charming Faroese church and turf-roofed houses. At the base of the village is a beautiful tidal lagoon made all the more spectacular by the backdrop of rugged fjords. We'll then return to Gjógv for dinner and keep our eye on the Aurora forecast for the night. Accommodation for the evening will be in Gjógv.

Day 4 - Funningur Church, Kalsoy Island, Vidareidi Church

On day four, we'll wake up early for a sunrise shoot at Funningur church – a traditional wooden building with a grassy roof will make for a truly enchanting subject beneath the first rays of light. After sunrise, we'll return to the hotel for breakfast and a brief rest. Later in the morning, we'll journey to nearby Kalsoy Island, where undulating valleys hide small villages amidst other photographic delights. Our goal will be to reach the Kallur Lighthouse on this remote island – a standout figure in the fascinating landscape with its rustic red and white design. The hike will take around an hour and we'll make the most of our time absorbing the views during the ascent. In the afternoon, we'll make our way to the Viðareiði church, where we'll capture the last rays of light over its white facade, framed by clouds, majestic sea cliffs and a spectacular mountain peak in the background. After dinner, we'll keep our eyes trained to the skies in search of the Northern Lights. If the conditions are not favourable, then we'll settle in for a masterclass post-processing session at the Gjógv hotel.

Day 5 - Torshavn City, Saksun Village

On day five, there will be the option of a sunrise shoot in the valleys of Tjørnuvík village or a hike to one of the mountain ridges surrounding Gjógv, where we'll be treated to panoramic vistas of the scenic fjords. After sunrise, we'll make our way back to the hotel for breakfast and a short rest, before heading out on a day trip to Tórshavn – the capital city of the Faroe Islands. Named after Thor, the Norse god of thunder, this pretty little city is one of the smallest capitals in the world, though what it lacks in size it makes up for with culture and scenery. We'll spend the day exploring the cosy atmosphere of charming wooden, colourful turf-roofed houses in this historic port city as we sample the local cuisine. In the afternoon, we'll return to Saksun village for another sunset session, before retiring for the night at Gjógv.
