Slovenia is a magical photography destination with a growing reputation. In many ways, it’s a surprise that it’s taken this long for the wider world to realise. But their loss is our gain. The country’s natural beauty has never been in doubt, from the soaring peaks of the Julian Alps and harbour towns straight out of a picture book to lush forests and dramatic architecture. Slovenia is a friendly place where nature is adored and respected, and the locals live in harmony with the land in towns and cities that strive to be just as beautiful as their surroundings.
On this enchanting photography tour, we’ll take in the best sights that Slovenia has to offer, from the epic Julian Alps and the stunning mountain landscapes, glacial lakes and rivers of the Triglav National Park, to an immersive view of the country through a more cultural lens. We will capture life in traditional villages, visit the iconic church on Bled island, and capture the hidden corners of the historic capital city of Ljubljana.
This photography tour is the perfect way to get to know Slovenia through the lens of your camera. We will travel through picturesque villages and breathtaking landscapes, all the while taking the time to appreciate the slower pace of life and natural charm of this wonderful country. We’ll be exploring Slovenia across eight days in a relatively small group, in a tour led by an experienced photography professional.
The staggering range of locations and subjects will give you plenty of opportunities to develop your skills and capture timeless scenes, and our well-chosen accommodation and transport will ensure that the whole adventure is as comfortable as you could wish for.
On day one the group will meet together in Ljubljana, Slovenia’s capital. We want to make the most of our first day, so we’ll head straight to the pristine, iconic resort of Lake Bled in the north. The emerald lake is arguably Slovenia’s most popular tourist spot, and after a few minutes walking around you’ll quickly understand why. The water shines with dazzling green and blue tones, a charming church rests on a tiny island in the centre, and the imposing peaks of the Julian Alps and the Karavanke offer the perfect backdrop for photography shoots.
All in all, it’ll be breathless start and a first day to remember. We will spend the afternoon at the lake capturing the scenery in the best light possible, and will then get together in the evening at our accommodation, spend some time getting to know one another, and talk about the adventure to come over dinner.
Over the next two days the group will explore the beautiful Gorenjska region, starting with a sunrise shoot on the shores of Lake Bled. After, we’ll head up to the castle that sits on a hill overlooking the lake’s northern coast. From a higher vantage point we can photograph spectacular mountain vistas, the island in the middle of the lake, and the quaint church that perches precariously upon it.
After starting the day exploring Bled lake, we will take a short drive north to Vintgar Gorge. One of Slovenia’s hidden gems, the Vintgar Gorge is an ethereal, 1.6km-long display of nature at its finest. Fast-flowing water carves its way through the vertical rocks of the Hom and Bort hills, and there are several waterfalls, pools and rapids to capture. Because of this, it’s the perfect location to experiment with long exposures.
An hour’s drive south-west and we’ll reach the second glacial lake of this Slovenia photography tour: Bohinj. Lake Bohinj is the country’s largest body of water, and if you thought Bled was as good as it gets, you’ve got another thing coming. In many ways Bohinj is more traditional and a touch more laid back. There are less tourists here, even if the sights are equally, if not more, worthy of recognition. Bohinj is in the heart of the Julian Alps and bordered by hills and majestic pine trees. The crystal clear water will allow us to get creative with some reflections, and we’ll spend plenty of time doing exactly that.
Next up, a short drive will take us around some of Lake Bohinj’s surrounding villages. Here we can glance back in time at traditional Slovenia, and shoot agricultural architecture such as the country’s famous hay racks. Scenes of rural village life will be all around, and we will take our time exploring the essence of a nation. To finish the day we will head back to the lake for a sunset photography shoot.
On day four we’ll leave lake Bohinj behind and take the Vrsic pass through the Julian Alps. The pass is the highest way through the mountains, and we’ll be surrounded on all sides by pointed peaks and majestic views. As a group we will then make our way down into the Soca River Valley, where we can explore and photograph more of the Triglav National Park.
We’ll spend the afternoon capturing the incredible waters of the Soca as we hike along the arching riverbanks, among lush forests and look downstream at the sight of the imperious peaks of the Julian Alps. If we’re lucky, there might even be some wildlife to photograph in Slovenia’s only national park. Aside from that, we’ll look out for gorges and waterfalls as we head down the valley, and photograph the historical World War I remnants that line our path.
On day six the plan is to head down from the clouds, leave the Julian Alps behind and travel to the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana. Over the next two days the group will wander the streets of what is one of the greenest cities in Europe. Its center has been completely pedestrianised, so we can enjoy the beautiful river thriving culture and glorious architecture in peace. Our aim will be to capture as much of the city as possible, from its marvellous baroque churches and grand old castle to portraits of locals as they go about their business in markets humming with verve and activity.
Aside from intimately photographing Slovenia’s capital, we will arrange a half-day trip to one of the country’s man scenic locations.
Day eight represents the end of our Slovenian adventure, and we’ll drop you at the airport in Ljubljana loaded with new friends, photography skills and lifelong memories.
